I am interested to know what functionality available through the SMART desktop software is not available when using SCaaS. Specifically, does SCaaS support customized data models? And does it support customized reporting templates? For example, using R scripts?

Generally speaking, Connect facilitates running queries and reports, as well as some data visualization, but configuring those items and the full suite of functionality is in desktop.
Customized data models/reports/etc would all be configured in desktop and then can be run on connect (pending permissions). There’s also an R integration in desktop that will allow you to run R scripts on SMART data. More info here: R Plugin Overview_V2_2022.pdf - Google Drive
