Changing mode of transport for part of a patrol in Desktop

Hi, we sometimes have issues where a SMART Mobile user forgets to change the mode of transport. I have tried to edit the patrol in Desktop by converting the patrol to a multileg patrol, and then selecting the change of transport option, using the time that I can see the speed changed. It all works except it does not record the distance covered, the new leg just shows 0km.

Any suggestions on how I can split the patrol and change the mode of transport for the one leg whilst retaining the distance covered for that leg?

Hi Mathilde,

Thanks for your message on this. I believe this is currently a limitation of the software. It’s not able to port over & split the track from one leg to another.

The only simple solution currently is to use the “generate from waypoints” option to set the track for the newly created leg, if you have sufficient observations.

If you have a backup of the GPX file from a GPS device you may be able to import this and then use the option to view trackpoints > split > delete the track points for the irrelevant leg of the patrol. **

I appreciate these are not the best solutions.

I will create a ticket for this as this would be good to keep in mind for future development needs.

Cheers,

Alex

Hey Alex,

Thank you for explaining the current workaround options. I’m experiencing the same situation as Mathilde, and I’d like to share something that I tried since i do not have the GPX file backup :

  • Take a screenshot of the coordinates corresponding to the second leg and extract the data into a CSV file (since we can’t copy the coordinates directly from the track viewer).
  • Convert the CSV file to GPX format.
  • Upload the GPX file as the second leg.
  • Finally, delete the coordinates you initially copied from the first leg. This way, the distance will match each leg correctly.

It’s a bit of a long procedure, but might be worth trying?

Best,
Jackie

Hi Alex and @ Mathilde,

It’s me again… I was exploring the “Routes” feature and thought it could be really useful in this case. So, another idea came to mind:

  • Go to Field Data > SMART Mobile > Routes
  • Create a route using the track that’s already uploaded in the patrol you want to fix (to correct the leg distances)
  • Export the route as a file
  • Convert the JSON file to GPX
  • Upload the GPX file into the leg that currently shows “distance 0”, and delete the coordinates from the first leg that you don’t need

Another idea, which seems easier, was to:

  • Export the patrol track directly from the map window.
  • Convert the shp file into a GPX.

I wasn’t successful with this second approach, but I’m mentioning it just in case it might work for someone else.

Best,
Jackie
